今年2月間，Jobs敦促四大唱片公司放棄用DRM，當時即有部分觀察家指出，Jobs之所以這麼說，是可能是因為蘋果面臨歐洲主管當局的壓力。歐洲政府希望iPod/iTunes能敞開大門，接納其他的技術平台。
蘋果挾著市場銷售第一的iPod數位音樂播放機及iTunes音樂網站，在數位音樂下載市場的地位舉足輕重。蘋果先前已跟全球第三大唱片公司EMI Group簽約，將銷售EMI未加裝防拷軟體的音樂。
Jobs說：「別家唱片公司有許多人也興趣濃厚。」意指銷售不含防拷軟體的音樂。他說：「他們正在認真思考這個選項。」
分析師說，EMI和蘋果簽約，讓環球音樂(Universal Music Group)、Sony和Bertelsmann合資的Sony BMG、以及時代華納集團旗下的華納音樂(Warner Music Group)陷入進退兩難的處境。
